Soldiers undertaking combat duty deal with the threats of war: bullets, IEDs, suicide bombing, sniper fire, ambush, and the threat of capture to name a few. But the threats to a soldier's health do not cease upon repatriation. In fact, for many the health effects from active service abroad only begin when they return home as the reality of their experiences settles in, and the invisible wounds of war surface and consumes them: post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anger, substance abuse, traumatic brain injury, and related conditions. PTSD is real. For those who suffer from PTSD, it engulfs their entire life. PTSD strains relationships, influences lifestyles, inhibits sleep and often causes victims to turn to alcohol or drugs to cope with their flashbacks, depression and constant anxiety. The past 20 years have seen drastic medical advancements in understanding the symptoms and warning signs of PTSD and there has been some improvement in treating the disorder. When confronted with soldiers suffering from PTSD, the Canadian Forces' approach is becoming more and more adept at combining the efforts of primary health care and behavioural health providers to address the PTSD issues that affect military members and members of their families before, during, and after deployment. However, it is a work in progress and there is still a considerable distance to go in reaching an acceptable standard. Consider a recent example, that of Master Corporal Frank (Frankie) Riley.
